HISTORY OF UNIZIK ADVANCEMENT BOARD
NNAMDI AZIKIWE UNIVERSITY, AWKA
The University Advancement Board (UAB) was created on 2nd February, 2024, as a new
Directorate, with Prof. Ebele Mary Onwuka as the pioneer Director. The University
advancement board was created to provide the necessary support to the development of the
university. The university authority has realized that while the Federal Government would
continue to be a major source of funding of the university there is need to establish a
department/unit which would provide an independent source of income to support the institution.
The establishment of Advancement Board therefore was intended to provide a means by which
assistance received in form of cash, donations prizes, equipment and professional endowment
from individuals, organization, NGOs etc could be invested to provide a regular source of
income for the University.
The name, office of Advancement was adopted in line with the current global trends on fund
raising to support the university education and the office is headed by a Director.
The “Advancement Management Board” is the body that is charged with policy formulations for
the department and they have to make meaningful contribution to the development of the
University by attracting various forms of support for the university from individuals and
corporate organizations, Alumni being the main focus.
UAB is currently housed by the Centre for Migration Studies in their building as the Directorate
has not gotten a permanent building of its own. The UAB comprises four units:
1. Operation
2. Development
3. Marketing
4. Gifts Administration.
Also, the Advancement Board works with committees, these committee bodies are;
1. Endowment Committee
2. Finance Committee
3. Alumni Relations
4. Communication and Publicity
5. Development/Special Donor Survey Committee
UNIZIK Advancement Board through the help of the Management has succeeded in registering
with the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). CASE is a global non-
profit association dedicated to educational advancement professionals – in Alumni Relations,
Communications, development, marketing and advancement services, who share the goal of
championing education to transform lives and society.
The membership is institutionally based and requires training of members in area of capacity
building, fund-raising and other matters relating to university advancement programmes. Hence,
the Director Prof Ebele Mary Onwuka and the former Vice Chancellor, Prof Charles Esimone,
attended the initial training at Washington DC., USA on June 16 – June 18, 2024.
